Entry requirements

Bachelor's degree including 90 credits in Media and Communication Studies as the main field of study, and English 6 or equivalent. You also need: English 6 or the equivalent.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:

  • explain in depth the role of the media as a social institution, and how the conditions of media production affect texts, audience formations, and societal power
  • independently summarise, analyse and evaluate qualified academic texts, and to communicate these skills orally (in academic seminars) and in written reports
  • independently and critically discuss key theoretical and methodological issues relating to research in the field of media and the arts and culture industry.

Course content, modules and examinations

The course covers theories and methods that deal with the media as a social institution, and how their production conditions may affect media texts, audience formations, and societal power. It aims to contextualise and historicise various theoretical perspectives, through contemporary and historical studies. The focus is on autonomously and critically assimilating advanced theoretical knowledge in this research field, describing these, and developing applications.

Course design

Instruction takes place in the form of seminars.

Examination format

The course is examined via a: written take‑home exam, active participation in seminars. Attendance is compulsory at the introduction and at all seminars.Oral presentations

Absence from individual seminars can be compensated by written assignments as instructed by the course coordinator.

The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.

If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.

Restrictions on accreditation

The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.

Other stipulations

Following the Vice-Chancellors decision on internationalization and grade scale at Södertörn University College (dnr: 1148-1.1.2-2018), this syllabus replaces the syllabus with course code 1111MV, with the difference that the grade system has been updated. The syllabus is determined through special order (dnr: 1774-2.1.1-2018).

Revision of the syllabus 2023-08-30 concerns the correction of the course name of a prerequisite upper secondary school course, from English B to English 6, in the entry requirements. The revision has been carried out by University administration according to decision on correction of entry requirements regarding language skills acquired in upper secondary school (dnr 2906-2.1.1-2023).
