Entry requirements

Bachelor's degree including 90 credits in Media and Communication Studies as the main field of study or equivalent, and English B or equivalent.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:

  • express deepened knowledge of theoretical perspectives about digital media technologies
  • nuanced and critically discuss and problematize production conditions of digital media
  • nuanced and critically discuss and problematize media literacy
  • apply the theoretical knowledge in his/her own analyses and media productions
  • reflect upon the development of digital media technologies
  • critically evaluate different theoretical perspectives about media literacy

Course content, modules and examinations

In this course knowledge and skills about the production conditions of digital media technologies are combined with a deepened knowledge and perspectives about media literacy. The emphasis of the course is on the conditions for producing and storage of searchable information and media content. The course also provides a deeper understanding of the role of computational media in order to develop critical and reflective perspectives on digital media.

Archives and Algorithms, 7.5 credits

The module examines digital media technologies from a production perspective. Particular focus is to deepen the understanding of storage and availability of media content. The technical, economic and legal conditions for digital media technologies are addressed through both theoretical reflection and practical exercises.

The module examines digital media technologies in relation to critical media and information literacy. Different perspectives on critical media and information literacy are provided through both theoretical reflection and practical exercises.

Course design

Teaching consists of lectures, seminars, practical exercises and project work, both individually and in groups. Theoretical and practical elements are integrated to train students in reflection and analysis..

Examination format

The modules are examined through:

  • Written exams
  • Media productions
  • Oral presentations
  • Seminars

The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.

If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.

Restrictions on accreditation

The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.
