Course content, modules and examinations

The course aims to strengthen and develop the student's oral and written skills in English and impart fundamental knowledge about linguistics, literature and culture in the English-speaking world.

Literature and Culture I, 7.5 credits

(Litteratur och kultur I, 7,5 högskolepoäng)

The student is introduced to a selection of texts and contexts in English-language literary and cultural studies, with a focus on Britain and its global interactions. The student learns basic concepts in narrative analysis and critical theory, analyses different texts types (including fiction, poetry, film, and critical writing), and acquires knowledge about the historical, social, economic, and political contexts in which Anglophone culture has developed in the modern world. The student is able to discuss literature and culture in an informed and self-reflective manner and to produce proficient written and oral analyses (both individually and in groups) following basic academic conventions.

This module aims to develop the student’s understanding of language structure and mastery of English grammar in both speech and writing.
During this module, the student deepens their knowledge of grammar - both general and English grammar. The module has two parts. The ability to analyse and understand the structure of language in general is developed in the first part, Basic Language Analysis. In the second part, Applied Grammar, the focus is on proficiency in English, and the ability to understand and apply grammar rules of English.

Survey Course in English Linguistics, 7.5 credits

(Översiktskurs i engelsk språkvetenskap, 7,5 högskolepoäng)

The student acquires the fundamentals of modern linguistic theories and their applications. This module includes subjects such as morphology, semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics and language acquisition, and approaches linguistic variation from geographical, social, cultural and situational perspectives. During the module, the student writes a short essay. Upon completion of the module, the student is able to understand, apply and discuss linguistic concepts, methods and argumentation.

Literature and Culture II, 7.5 credits

(Litteratur och kultur II, 7,5 högskolepoäng)

The student is introduced to a further selection of texts and contexts in English-language literary and cultural studies, with a focus on North America and the Caribbean. The student broadens their understanding of literary production and genres such as fiction, drama and hip-hop, as well as their knowledge of historical, social, economic, and political contexts in the English-speaking world. Close reading skills are consolidated. The student is expected to further develop their ability to discuss literature and culture in an informed and self-reflective manner and to produce proficient written and oral analyses (both individually and in groups) following basic academic conventions.

Course design

Teaching is in the form of lectures and seminars.

Examination format

If a student has missed more than 20% of the seminars and lectures on a module, this can only be compensated for by attending the seminars and/or lectures required to reach a minimum level of 80% overall attendance when the module is offered on another occasion.

The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.

If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.

Restrictions on accreditation

The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.
