This course syllabus was validated by the Management Board of the School of Natural Sciences, Technology and Environmental Studies at Södertörn University on 2018-04-23 according to the stipulations in the Higher Education Ordinance.

Entry requirements

The equivalent of English B and a Bachelor's degree including a minimum of 90 credits in Environmental Science, Bioscience, Political Science, Sociology, International Health, Media and Communication Studies, or the equivalent

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:

  • describe, compare and assess the major traditions of media and communications theory and methods relevant to environmental issues
  • understand and analyse the role of the media as a central social institution, a stakeholder and a form of representation relevant to environmental studies
  • in an autonomous manner, assess given theoretical approaches and case studies, making connections between the media and their social and cultural settings
  • apply an advanced theoretical framework to a given set of data or observations on issues related to media and the environment
  • present reports and literature reviews in oral and written forms
  • critically assess the role of the media for different stakeholders in the environmental sphere
  • evaluate the political impact of mediated communication in relation to democratisation and sustainable development.

Course content, modules and examinations

The couse analyses how environmental issues are framed in the mediated public sphere, how stakeholders communicate in this sphere, and the relationships between these stakeholders. Attention is also given to the role of the media in different media systems. Theories relating to the public sphere, media systems, news sociology and risk society, among others, are used and key concepts such as communication, media, risk and public spheres are discussed.

Course design

This course primarily builds on lectures in combination with compulsory seminars. These lectures and seminars are mainly designed to assist students in the study of the course literature, including selected research articles.

Examination format

Written home examination and oral contributions in seminars.

The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.

If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.

Restrictions on accreditation

The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.
