Entry requirements

The equivalent of English B and a Bachelor's degree including 90 credits in Environmental Science, Bioscience, Political Science, Sociology, International Health, Media and Communication Studies or the equivalent.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:

  • explain how different communication tools and forms of communication can be brought into line with the needs of different stakeholders
  • analyse how scientific knowledge and complex environmental issues can be communicated to a diverse range of stakeholders
  • use and assess different communication tools and rhetorical strategies
  • present scientific knowledge and complex environmental concepts in different forms to different audiences
  • critically assess the role of communication between different stakeholders in environmental issues
  • assess the political and ethical impact of different forms of communication.

Course content, modules and examinations

This course assesses and analyses key aspects of communicating scientific knowledge and complex environmental issues to a diverse range of stakeholders in the domain of environmental decision-making. It also examines how experts in environmental science communicate problems and solutions to other experts, politicians, media and the public. Using theories on scienctific communication, environmental rhetoric and popularisation of science as a basis, students complete different assignments to practice communication with different stakeholders.

Course design

This course includes lectures but builds primarily on compulsory seminars and supervised group assignments and discussions. A central role is given to guest lecturers, both for giving lectures on how to work with science and environmental communication and for discussing the students' presentations.

Examination format

The course is examined by:

  • An individual written home examination
  • Written group assignments
  • Oral presentations
  • Seminars and guest lectures
  • Written seminar assignments

Absence from compulsory seminars can, after consultation with the course coordinator, be compensated for by other assignments. Absence from more than 50% of the seminars requires that the student take the course again. Supplementary assignments must be handed in within one year of course completion.

If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.

The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.
