Validation

This course syllabus was validated by the Management Board of the School of Natural Sciences, Technology and Environmental Studies at Södertörn University on 2018-04-23 according to the stipulations in the Higher Education Ordinance.

Entry requirements

The equivalent of English B and a Bachelor's degree including a minimum of 90 credits in Environmental Science, Bioscience, Political Science, Sociology, International Health, Media and Communication Studies, or the equivalent.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:

  • critically evaluate and compare different theories and perspectives in the field of environmental communication
  • analyse and evaluate the different roles of organisations in processes of environmental communication
  • apply an advanced theoretical framework to different cases and issues concerning risk communication, public relations, and media activism
  • present and discuss literature reviews and reports in oral and written forms
  • critically assess media-related ethical aspects in relation to theories on environmental communication.

Course content, modules and examinations

The course focuses on communication processes between heterogeneous sets of stakeholders and aims to advance the understanding of complex environmental issues. Communication strategies with the general public are analysed and related to institutional structures, as well as to public attitudes towards environmental issues.

Various communication theories, including risk/crisis communication, are assessed in order to gain an understanding of communication processes about environmental issues, both within organisations and from organisations towards the public, the media and other institutions.

Course design

The course is designed around lectures in combination with mandatory group sessions and discussion seminars.

Examination format

Written home examination and oral contributions in seminars.

Absence from mandatory seminars can, after consultation with the course coordinator, be complemented with alternative tasks. Absence from more than 50% of the seminars requires that the student take the course again. Complementary tasks must be handed in within one year of course completion

The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.

If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.

Restrictions on accreditation

The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.
