The equivalent of English B and a Bachelor's degree including a minimum of 90 credits in Environmental Science, Bioscience, Political Science, Sociology, International Health, Media and Communication Studies, or the equivalent

Learning outcomes

On completing the course, the student can:

Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:assess different disciplinary perspectives on environmental governance and the role of experts problematise major features of EU influence over contemporary environmental governance compare and problematise major environmental issues from a multidisciplinary perspective apply given theoretical frameworks to research questions for exploring the interaction between science and policy understand the implications of expert participation in relation to sustainable development critically assess the social, political and ecological impact from various forms of expert and stakeholder participation in contemporary environmental governance.

Course content, modules and examinations

The focus of this course is on the multidisciplinary analysis of international environmental collaboration, but implications at national and local levels are discussed as well. Special emphasis is given to the roles played by experts in environmental governance, EU perspectives, and collaboration on global environmental problems. Theories related to multilevel governance, Europeanisation, and regime analysis with bearing on environmental topics are used in a synthesising way, as analytical instruments to enrich the understanding of complex key relationships.

Course design

This course primarily builds on lectures in combination with compulsory seminars. These lectures and seminars are primarily designed to assist students in the study of the course literature.

Examination format

Written, on-campus, examination covering the course literature and seminar assignments. Absence from a maximum of 50% of the seminars can be compensated by written assignments. Compensatory assignments must be handed in within one year of course completion.

The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.

If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.

Restrictions on accreditation

The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.
