The equivalent of English B and a Bachelor's degree including 90 credits in Environmental Science, Bioscience, Sociology, International Health, Media Communcation Studies, or the equivalent

On completing the course, the student can:

Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:synthesise different theoretical ideas and approaches in sustainability and ecosystem management relevant for the integrated management of social-ecological systems define and apply concepts of ecosystem services and the resilience of social-ecological systems critically analyse theories and approaches for different aspects of ecosystem management in current research as well as in national and international implementation policies relevant for ecosystem governance critically assess one's own attitudes and work in relation to different theories and ideas about ecosystem management and sustainability.

Course content, modules and examinations

The course is problem oriented, including both social and natural science aspects about integrated governance of social-ecological systems. The course provides scientific foundations, goals and measures for ecosystem management and includes key points such as: the concept of ecosystem services, links to biological diversity, processes and functions in ecosystems, adaptive and participatory governance perspectives, property and user rights of ecosystems and natural resources.

Course design

The course consists of lectures, seminars, and smaller individual and group assignments, including oral and written reports.

Examination format

Written examination, mandatory oral and written seminar presentations. Absence from seminars must be compensated for through alternative assignments. Absence from a maximum of 50% of the seminars can be compensated by written assignments. Compensatory assignments must be handed in within one year of course completion.

The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.

If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.

Restrictions on accreditation

The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.
