General entry requirements (Specific entry requirements A6, exemption provided for basic level social sciences (equivalent of Swedish course Social Sciences 1b / 1a1+1a2)).

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student will be able to

  • identify and describe social norms regarding sexuality and gender in Sweden during the 20th century and to the present day
  • identify and describe how the Swedish state perceived and intervened in the area of sexuality and reproduction
  • discuss changes in how gender, sexuality and the family have been perceived and relate them to changes in Swedish society and politics
  • compare social norms and discussions regarding sexuality and gender in Sweden with discussions in other countries.

Course content, modules and examinations

The course provides insights into how social norms regarding sexuality and gender have been defined and discussed in Sweden during the 20th century and to the present day. The focus is on three periods: the interwar period, the welfare state after the second world war and contemporary society. Social norms regarding men’s and women’s places in society, the definition and importance of the family, as well as the state's regulation of and intervention in areas of sexuality and reproduction, are discussed during the course.

Course design

The course consists of lectures and seminars. There may be group assignments, to be presented to the class in group presentations. Attendance at all seminars is compulsory.

Examination format

Examination will be in the form of active participation in seminars, active participation in group assignments, shorter written assignments and a written take-home essay.

Make-up work in the form of written assignments will be required for all missed seminars. However, students who are absent for more than 20% of the compulsory seminars are not considered to have participated adequately in the course, and will not receive a pass grade.

The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.

If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.

Restrictions on accreditation

The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.

Other stipulations

Following the Vice-Chancellors decision on internationalization and grade scale at Södertörn University College (dnr: 1148-1.1.2-2018), this syllabus replaces the syllabus with course code 1166HI, with the difference that the grade system has been updated.
