Entry requirements

Degree of Bachelor of Arts in the humanities, and English 6 or the equivalent

Learning outcomes

On completing the course, the student can:

  • describe and independently reflect on the emergence of the concept of criticism, its significance as a publishing practice and as a form of knowledge in relation to the aesthetic disciplines
  • independently reflect on and problematise the role of criticism in the new public sphere and in relation to different media
  • analyse the practice of cultural criticism from the perspectives of contemporary politics, society and media
  • compare and analyse critical approaches from an aesthetic, political, societal and medial perspective
  • write art criticism intended for the public sphere

Course content, modules and examinations

During the course, the student develops their knowledge of criticism as a cultural expression. They study the practice of criticism from historical and contemporary perspectives, and advance their knowledge of the political, societal and medial roles of criticism. The student works with current theoretical perspectives that are relevant to criticism as a practice and reflects on the role of criticism in the new public sphere, as well as the challenges and opportunities associated with the media in this new public sphere in relation to democratic society.

Course design

Teaching is in the form of lectures and seminars.

Examination format

  • The course is examined via participation in the seminars, written hand-in assignments and oral presentations. Absence from seminars may be compensated for through written hand-in assignments

The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.

If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.

Restrictions on accreditation

The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.
