Learning outcomes

On completing the course, the student can:

  • initiate an account of relevant concepts and historical lines and critically analyse the causes and consequences of colonialism, postcolonialism and tricontinentalism 
  • critically discuss different forms of colonisation, colonialism and coloniality 
  • critically evaluate and discuss social change from global historical perspectives,
  • independently and critically reflect on the history of colonialism, postcolonialism and tricontinentalism, 
  • reflect on the global history of colonialism and how the history of colonialism is presented in previous research, 
  • apply global historical conceptualisation within the research field of colonialism and discuss global historical theoretical and methodological perspectives.

Course content, modules and examinations

The course introduces and problematises the history of colonisation (settlements) and colonialism (systems, practices and principles of administration of colonies under colonial rule) and their outcomes, coloniality (the colonial character or quality of power and power structures that bridge the past and the present), and local reactions and responses to colonialism (tricontinentalism). The course aims to provide students with in-depth knowledge and understanding of historical processes from a global historical perspective. The course will highlight and discuss different forms and expressions of internalised colonialism, anti-colonialism and anti-imperialism.

Course design

Teaching is conducted in the form of lectures and seminars. Supervision takes place in connection with the submission of a report and preparation for the examination presentation. 

Examination format

The module is examined through: 

• active participation in seminars and seminar exercises,  

• written assignments, 

• individual presentation on a pre-selected topic. 

If supplementary assignments are offered, they must be submitted within three weeks of the notification of the assignment's evaluation. If a supplementary assignment does not achieve a pass grade, the student must redo the assignment in its entirety.

The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.

If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.

Restrictions on accreditation

The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.
