Learning outcomes
On completing the course, the student can:
- Describe and discuss early modern Swedish history from cultural, economic, political, and social perspectives.
- Describe and discuss central characteristics of an early modern state using Sweden as an example.
- Define and use central concepts of cultural, economic, political, and social history.
Course content, modules and examinations
The course introduces Sweden as an early modern North European Empire, c. 1500 to 1800 from cultural, economic, political, and social perspectives. The Sweden of the period will be placed in a broad context, discussing the causes and effects of the Swedish empire at societal and individual levels.

The course is taught through a combination of lectures and seminars. Additional teaching may take place off-campus.
Examination format
Examination takes the form of active participation in seminars, journal entries and a written hand-in assignment.
A maximum absence from mandatory seminars of 20% may be compensated for through written assignments. Students who are absent for more than 20% of the mandatory seminars are not considered to have completed the course and will not receive a pass grade.
The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.
If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.
Restrictions on accreditation
The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.
Other stipulations
The entry requirements in the course syllabus have been adapted on 24 June 2025 due to the introduction of subject grades in upper secondary education. Adaptation conducted by the university administration, in accordance with the vice-chancellor’s decision to adapt entry requirements to the introduction of subject grades in upper secondary education (registration number 1047-1.1.2-2025).
