This course syllabus was validated by the Management Board of the School of Historical and Contemporary Studies at Södertörn University on 2024-06-04 according to the stipulations in the Higher Education Ordinance.

Entry requirements

30 credits in Social Science or Humanities. You also need: English 6 or the equivalent.

Learning outcomes

On completing the course, the student can:

  • critically reflect on the history of colonialism and imperialism,
  • discuss and compare the historical course of colonialism and imperialism,
  • orientate themselves in previous research, and discuss different researchers' perspectives on a historical problem,
  • apply a gender and/or intercultural perspective to the analysis of a historical problem
  • reflect on the importance of how different choices of perspective affect our view of the past, and thus also our view of both the present and the future.

Course content, modules and examinations

The course deals with colonialism and imperialism as two important phenomena and their impact, from a local to a global level, from early modern times to the history of the 20th century. The phenomena have been, and still are, the background to complex social and political problems. The course highlights aspects, concepts and historical realities as well as its counter narratives such as anti-colonialism and anti-imperialism.

Course design

Teaching takes the form of lectures, seminars and group work. 

Examination format

The course requires:

  • active participation in seminars and seminar exercises
  • written assignments
  • group presentations

The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.

If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.

Restrictions on accreditation

The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.
