Validation

This course syllabus was validated by the Management Board of the School of Natural Sciences, Technology and Environmental Studies at Södertörn University on 2023-06-07 according to the stipulations in the Higher Education Ordinance.

Entry requirements

The equivalent of English 6 and a Bachelor's degree natural science, social sciences or humanities including a minimum of 90 credits relevant to the environment, sustainability or global development.

Learning outcomes

On completing the course, the student can:

  • problematise core concepts in the research field of transnational governance.
  • analyse environmental issues by using overarching concepts such as governance, civil society, globalisation and sustainable development
  • apply core theoretical concepts in the research field of sustainability, civil society and transnational governance to analyse challenges to effective and legitimate governance linked to various environmental issues
  • critically review, present and discuss theories and literature within the research fields of sustainability, civil society and transnational governance
  • assess scientific, ethical and societal aspects related to environmental science
  • analyse governance implications in relation to the social, environmental and economic dimensions of sustainable development.

Course content, modules and examinations

This course discusses challenges to sustainable development that are related to transnational (multilevel) governance, where various players (state and non-state players) interact in complex ways. The concepts of global civil society, non-governmental organisations, and social movements are explored in relation to literature on transnational governance. Consequences and challenges resulting from transnational and multi-level governance are analysed. Such topics include problems surrounding legitimacy, representation, and impact.

Course design

This course primarily builds on seminars and introductory lectures. The lectures and seminars are primarily designed to assist students in the study of the course literature.

Examination format

The course is examined by:

  • Written hand in assignments
  • Seminar attendence
  • Oral presentations

 

Absence from a maximum of 50% of the seminars can, after consultation with the course examiner, be compensated for with written assignments. The assignments must be handed in within one year of the completion of the course.

The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.

If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.

Restrictions on accreditation

The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.
