This course syllabus was validated by the Management Board of the School of Natural Sciences, Technology and Environmental Studies at Södertörn University on 2023-03-22 according to the stipulations in the Higher Education Ordinance.
Entry requirements
The equivalent of English 6 and a Bachelor's degree in natural science, social sciences or humanities including a minimum of 90 credits relevant to the environment, sustainability or global development.
Learning outcomes
On completing the course, the student can:
- identify, describe, and critically interpret central concepts and theories in contemporary development and sustainability studies
- explain and critically discuss different development strategies and their importance for the environment, economy, and social justice
- identify, compare, and evaluate how different political and academic perspectives and arguments relate to challenges in development and sustainability
- apply collective learning processes that promote the understanding of global development and sustainability issues.
Course content, modules and examinations
This course discusses and problematises contemporary critical debates in the fields of global development and sustainability studies. The design of the course enables the students, together with the teacher, to develop the course content based on their interests, while strengthening their critical perspectives on development and sustainability. There will be specific focus on analytical and normative aspects of the course material.

Course design
The course includes lectures, seminars and group work. The course is based upon a high level of student participation in the development of the course content, its design and implementation. Student influence is further promoted through interactive student-teacher engagement and exchanges around groundbreaking debates in critical development and sustainability studies.
Examination format
1001, Contemporary Debates in Development and Sustainability Studies - Theory, 5 credits
- written report
1002, Contemporary Debates in Development and Sustainability Studies - Seminars, 2.5 credits
- oral presentation and written assignments (in groups and individually)
- seminar participation.
Absence from no more than 50% of the seminars may, after instructions from the examining teacher, be compensated for by written assignments. The compensatory assignments must be submitted within one year of completing the course.
The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.
If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.
Restrictions on accreditation
The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.
