Entry requirements
Bachelor's degree including 90 credits in Media and Communication Studies as the main field of study, and English 6 or equivalent.
Learning outcomes
On completing the course, the student can:
- display in‑depth understanding of theories within media and communication studies relating to visual practices
- independently and critically discuss central theoretical and methodological issues in relation to visual practices, using the perspective of media and communication studies
- in a nuanced and critical manner, reflect on, contextualise and historicise visual practices from the perspective of media and communication studies
Course content, modules and examinations
The course investigates theories in media and communication studies relating to visual practices in mediatized and datafied societies. The course includes contextualising and historicising different theoretical perspectives in the research field. The focus is on the independent and critical appropriation of advanced theories within this research field.

Course design
The course is conducted as seminars.
Examination format
The course is examined through:
- written essay
- oral presentation
- active seminar participation
Absence from a maximum of one seminar can be compensated for through a written assignment.
The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.
If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.
Restrictions on accreditation
The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.
