Entry requirements

Bachelor's degree including 90 credits in Economics as the main field of study, English B, Mathematics C or equivalent qualifications

On completion of the course, the student is able to:

Applicability

The Master’s programme provides the student with the qualifications required for positions in the financial sector, central government, academia and other public sectors as well as in private firms outside the financial sector, such as consultancies. The Master’s programme in economics prepares the student for PhD studies as well as providing a sound basis for a professional career outside the academic world.

Qualification stipulation:

To attain a Master’s degree, the student must have completed courses corresponding to 120 credits of which at least 60 credits must be from courses at an increasingly advanced level in the main field of study. The student must have written a dissertation (degree project) corresponding to at least 30 credits.

Programme design

Semester 1, focusing on advanced applications of economics and social science methods, consists of one compulsory and three optional courses. The courses are research based and their aim is to enable the student to independently write a dissertation and acquire the required skills within a field of application in economics where the wider social context is of particular relevance.

Semester 2 focuses primarily on advanced applications in the field of economics and consists of four optional courses.

Semester 3 contains advanced economic theory as well as courses that widen and deepen the student's knowledge of social science methods. It consists of two compulsory and two optional courses. The compulsory courses deepen the understanding of core economic theory, introducing the student to the theoretical foundations of research in economics and to its applications.

Semester 4 consists of a compulsory course that comprises the writing of a Master's dissertation (degree project).

The programme deepens as well as widens the student’s base of knowledge. The aim of the core theory courses and the independent dissertation is to provide greater depth, while the aim of the other courses is to deepen as well as widen the student's perspectives.

In addition to the elective courses listed above, students may choose to study other courses at advanced level at Södertörn University or other national or international institution. To ensure that students who choose this option reads a sufficient number of courses within the main field of study, the courses must be approved by the Program Convenor.
