Validation

This course syllabus was validated by the Management Board of the School of Social Sciences at Södertörn University on 2021-10-04 according to the stipulations in the Higher Education Ordinance.

Entry requirements

Bachelor's degree including 90 higher education credits in Sociology or the equivalent. In addition, English 6 or the equivalent.

Learning outcomes

On completing the course, the student can:

  • explain and critically interpret how, and with what theoretical and methodological tools, sociological analyses are constructed
  • using central sociological analytical perspectives, problematise and analyse ideas about how society can be explained
  • critically interpret assumptions about reality and problematise how knowledge about reality can be acquired
  • analyse and compare different types of societal change
  • demonstrate awareness of the inherent possibilities and limitations of scientific theories and methods

Course content, modules and examinations

The course deals with current perspectives in sociological analysis with a strong emphasis on their ideas about how society can be explained. Special focus is placed on the ontological assumptions of these analytical perspectives, their views of knowledge and explanatory models.

Course design

Instruction is provided in the form of lectures, seminars and group exercises.

The course includes lectures that cover the major part of the literature, as well as seminars where participants can develop their own ideas about the literature. At the seminars, students deal with written questions and papers or other relevant texts on central themes in the literature.

Examination format

Seminar participation and individual written assignments.

Occasional missed seminars can, after consultation with the examiner, be compensated for with written assignments.

The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.

If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.

Restrictions on accreditation

The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.
