This course syllabus was validated by the Management Board of the School of Social Sciences at Södertörn University on 2022-12-15 according to the stipulations in the Higher Education Ordinance.
Entry requirements
Bachelor's degree including 90 credits in Social Sciences as the main field of study, and English 6 or equivalent.
Learning outcomes
On completing the course, the student can:
- present central theories and concepts within the contemporary field of social movements studies,
- critically examine the assumptions and empirical underpinnings of the various theories and concepts,
- analyse contemporary or historical social movements using central theories and concepts in the field,
- independently produce knowledge reviews based on literature in the field,
- independently and critically examine and evaluate advanced research findings in the field.
Course content, modules and examinations
The course provides an overview of central theories and concepts within the contemporary field of social movement studies, focusing on social movements’ role in society, how movements emerge and develop, who participates in movements, how movements are organised, they methods they use to influence politics and society, how political context affects movements, and what role emotions and collective identity play within movements. These perspectives are then applied to selected case studies. Great emphasis is put on critically examining the various perspectives and connecting them to empirical issues.

The teaching consists of lectures and seminars
Examination format
- Individual written hand-in assignments
- Oral presentations
- Seminar participation
Occasional missed seminars can, after consultation with the examiner, be compensated for through written hand-in assignments.
The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.
If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.
Restrictions on accreditation
The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.
