Entry requirements

Bachelor's degree with at least 60 higher education credits in Tourism Studies as the main field of study and and upper secondary course English 6, or equivalent.

Learning outcomes

On completing the course, the student can:

Knowledge and understanding

  • contextualise the phenomenon of tourism and its role in society,
  • explain the driving forces and theories behind tourism in metropolitan destinations,
  • explain how metropolitan tourism can be organised at a destination with regard to its societal context and sustainable development;
  • discuss how a hosting system can be handled in a tourism company from a business management perspective,
  • explain how information technology can streamline a tourist company's operations and create added value for visitors, 
  • describe and explain how events affect postmodern society.


Skills and abilities

  • independently analyse tourism-related theories using a critical approach,
  • critically examine how business processes in tourism can be developed with the help of information technology,
  • critically analyse a metropolitan destination using tourism studies theory.


Evaluation ability and approach

  • critically reflect on the importance of tourism in building bridges between individuals, groups and countries in a multicultural and global world,
  • critically examine and evaluate tourism and its development using different theories and perspectives on sustainable development.

Course content, modules and examinations

This course has a multidisciplinary and international approach with metropolitan tourism as its starting point. The impact of events on society is studied and a sustainability analysis is conducted regarding how the management of a hospitality company deals with hospitality. Furthermore, an understanding is created for how information technology is used in business processes, development of business organisations and tourism products. The course also includes critical analysis of driving forces and strategies in the development of European metropolitan destinations.

Events in Changing Societies, 7.5 credits

The module focuses on how events affect society from an economic, ecological and social perspective. For example, the purpose of an event, target group segmentation, site marketing, image creation, stakeholder theory and the events' connection to the tourism industry are studied. Furthermore, social transformations as a result of technological development in the event industry are discussed, such as digital meetings, globalisation and glocalisation. Finally, the student conducts an independent analysis of an event phenomenon based on a relevant theoretical framework.

Sustainable Hospitality Management: a Manager's Perspective, 7.5 credits

(Hospitality Management ur ett hållbart ledningsperspektiv, 7,5 högskolepoäng)

In this module, the role of management in the tourism company is critically examined from a sustainable perspective. The first part focuses on leadership and general management of the company's human resources, the second part business and service product development, the third part service processes and management of the host and the fourth part different sustainability strategies such as the company's environmental impact and social responsibility.

Information, Communication & Technology in Tourism Business, 7.5 credits

This module examines and assesses how information and communication technology (ICT) is used in the tourism companies' business processes. Various digital tools, such as the Internet, apps, booking systems, e-business, social media and geographic information systems, are critically analyzed in terms of function, compatibility with other IT devices and finances. It also deals with how added value for the customer can be created by the service provider through new tourist products based on information technology. Finally, it discusses how different tourism organizations can be integrated through ICT.

City Tourism: a European Perspective, 7.5 credits

(Storstadsturism - ett europeiskt perspektiv, 7,5 högskolepoäng)

This module deals with the concept of European metropolitan tourism. The students perform a critical comparative analysis of the conditions for metropolitan tourism in different European cities. Furthermore, a deeper understanding is created of how complex metropolitan tourism-related products can be developed for both foreign and local customer groups. Finally, it is analyzed how the city's tourist destination can be organized from an integrated tourist, housing and working life perspective.

Course design

The course is given in the form of lectures, seminars, project work and group work. All teaching is in English. However, individual students may choose between submitting written assignments in English or Swedish.

Absence from a maximum of one (1) seminar opportunity per module can, in consultation with the course coordinator, be compensated with a written individual assignment. 

The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.

If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.

Restrictions on accreditation

The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.

Other stipulations

Syllabus revised on 30 August 2023 to correct the title of a required upper-secondary school course, from English B to English 6, in the entry requirements. Revision was conducted by university administration under the decision on the correction of entry requirements regarding language skills acquired in upper-secondary school (reg. no. 2906-2.1.1-2023).
