Austin Franklin (b. 1995) is an internationally recognized composer, sound artist, developer, and researcher. His interests include music involving process, methodical thematic development, and an attention to texture and form. His work has been described as having “great subtlety and sophistication” (The American Prize) and “striking and delightful” (New York Concert Review). In 2022, he made his Carnegie Hall debut with a performance of his String Quartet No. 1 “Lanterns” and was awarded the American Prize for Composition.
His recent research, in collaboration with Spotify, Ericsson, and Teenage Engineering, funded by KKS through the IRESAP project, centered on Spatial and merged reality audio, music information retrieval and personal information management, as well as networked audio and web-based audio streaming. As a leader in thought and practice using sonic art technology, he has developed several open source tools for composers and performers. These include a video game for live acoustic music performance called Plétude, an application built in openFrameoworks for organising media files on a local drive, and a software library for Cycling ’74 Max for real-time subjective music information retrieval with a microphone.
