Programme content
The programme is designed for students with a special interest in the spread and control of infectious diseases. The emergence and re-emergence of major infectious diseases is a growing and potentially global problem, especially for developing countries that have limited resources. One consequence of globalisation is that events in one part of the world can rapidly impact the local health status of multiple global locations. Infectious Disease Control (IDC) spans the medical, environmental, health science and socioeconomic aspects of infectious disease control. The biological mechanisms behind infectious diseases are discussed from a global perspective, focusing on prevention, diagnostics and therapy. Local and global social and environmental factors and climate change’s relationship to the emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases are analysed. Students will study infectious diseases using national and local health perspectives and examine how (inter)national strategies have an effect at an individual level. A modern toolbox for surveillance, evaluation and control of disease spread and epidemics is provided, including epidemiology, GIS, statistics, meta-analysis and mathematical modelling. Finally, students perform an individual epidemiological study of a disease using a national or international context.
