Tourism Studies: Master Programme

Programme 60 credits

This is the first genuine Master’s programme in Tourism that is based on Tourism studies in Sweden. The programme has a multidisciplinary and international approach, with city tourism as the stating point. The programme differs from undergraduate studies due to research links, independent work and in-depth tourism analysis.

Programme content

During the first semester, there are four courses that cover city tourism. An understanding of the role and importance of the tourism phenomenon in modern society is examined. After this, students study how operative management can be conducted effectively in a tourist company. Then, students study how information can be used in the travel process, as well as how new products and organization models can be developed. Finally, how tourist destinations can be planned and controlled with the help of a quality assurance system is examined. During the second semester, students work with a Master’s dissertation, starting with a literature study on a particular research question chosen by the individual student within the specified framework. New tourism research methods are studied in the context of the dissertation.

This programme has an earlier application period and is aimed at applicants who are non-EEA nationals. Please see www.sh.se/fees to find out more about applications and tuition fees.

Degree of Master of Science (60 credits) in Tourism Studies

After the programme

There are good career opportunities for well-educated staff within the expanding tourism industry, not only in the Greater Stockholm Region but also in cities abroad. Work and opportunities in industries closely connected to tourism depend on the individual student’s interests and specialised skills, as well as the labour market in the specific region. The following areas of work are suitable for students who have completed this Master’s programme: destination development within urban and rural environments; planning, selling and conducting professional markets in the meetings industry; people’s experience of visitor attractions in city centres and risk and safety aspects of the tourism industry. The programme also gives the students in-depth knowledge about current and central questions within tourism, as well as an increased academic ability in Tourism studies, which is a good basis for future research.
