In my dissertation project, I investigate multilingualism among internationally recruited researchers in Swedish higher education. Focusing on researchers’ linguistic practices in their professional everyday lives, the study explores how they experience and navigate the multilingual environments in which they work. The project seeks to examine the role of Swedish in a range of communicative contexts and to analyse its significance for researchers as both a professional and social resource. Situated within the broader context of internationalisation of higher education and the increasing linguistic diversity of university staff, the project also addresses institutional and – to some extent – societal expectations and requirements regarding proficiency in Swedish.
