In 2017 Maria Zuiderveld defended her doctoral thesis Battling the "Invisble Nets". Gender in the fields of journalism in sub-Saharan Africa.

Maria Zuiderveld is also a freelance journalist for SVT News at the Swedish public service broadcasting company.
