He received his PhD in 2005 for an award-winning dissertation on Max Weber and the concept of academic freedom. In his recent research, he has studied the emergence of the modern research university. In this context, he has examined the hopes and fears that German-speaking educators around 1800 tied to the break-through of a modern print culture.
