I hold a PhD in the sociology of education. My thesis, Science in Motion (in Swedish Vetenskap i rörelse), traces the emergence and conditions of a women’s scientific movement from the 1890s to the 1930s. The book describes how a group of women, sharing similar experiences and interests, worked together to reform the conditions for women’s participation in academia, drawing on ideas about science. Driven by a strong passion for science and the conviction that science was of crucial importance to society, they developed shared ideas about science and scientific practice. They argued for an alternative organisation of science in which women’s participation was not merely a matter of equality or assimilation, but a prerequisite for science to be able to approach a universal human understanding of reality.
