Title: (Re-)Conceptualising Home in Ukrainian Displacement Narratives: A Study of Refugee (Self-)Representation in Sweden, 2022–2026
Abstract: This presentation looks at the (re-)conceptualisation of home in Ukrainian displacement narratives in Sweden in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and onwards. It rests on corpus-assisted discourse analysis, media and framing analysis, cognitive linguistic and critical discourse analysis, as well as migration and refugee studies to perceptions of home against the backdrop of relevant EU and Swedish legal and policy contexts. Empirically, the study is longitudinal and based on the analysis of Swedish national and regional media publications from 2022-2026. The study is work in progress.
Olena Skuibida, Associate Professor of the Department of Occupational Safety and Environmental Protection at the National University Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic, Ukraine, and a Visiting Researcher at Södertörn University under the Ukrainian Research Fellowship Programme
Title: Citizen Science in Higher Education: Opportunities for Environmental Sustainability and Ukraine's Recovery
Abstract: Citizen science offers opportunities to engage the public in scientific research, while expanding environmental monitoring and raising awareness of environmental issues. This is particularly relevant for Ukraine, where the environmental consequences of the ongoing war create an urgent need for effective monitoring and evidence-based recovery approaches. Universities can play an important role in advancing citizen science by combining scientific expertize with public participation and fostering cooperation between researchers, communities and other stakeholders. However, the broader adoption of citizen science depends on how it is understood and perceived within academia, as well as on conditions and support available for its implementation. The seminar will explore the role of university-based citizen science in environmental protection and its potential to contribute to Ukraine’s recovery.
