Workshop on Digital Technologies, War, and Crisis: Legal, Ethical, and Sociotechnical Challenges
Welcome to a multidisciplinary Workshop
Cyberattacks, disinformation campaigns, and attacks on critical infrastructure are becoming increasingly common in conflicts. However, they are also used outside traditional wartime situations, often without it being clear who is responsible. This raises questions about whether such actions should be considered hybrid warfare, or warfare at all.
At the same time, modern societies depend heavily on digital systems. As a result, disruptions affecting hospitals, payment systems, energy supplies, or communication networks can quickly have wide-ranging effects on society. Similar problems can also arise from technical failures or natural disasters, which often expose the same weaknesses that hostile actors may seek to exploit.
This workshop brings together scholars from different disciplines and countries to discuss how digital technologies are changing the nature of war and crisis, and to examine the legal, ethical, and societal challenges that these developments create.
To receive the programme and attend the workshop, please send an email to patricia.jonason@sh.se before November 30th.
The workshop is organised by the Department of Law and the Department of Informatics and supported by the Centre for Baltic and East European Studies (CBEES) and by Interest Group on Security, surveillance and trust in the age of AI (part of the Digital Transformation research platform at Södertörn University)
