Theory and project work around a geographic information system
This course has two modules: a 3.5-credit theoretical module and a 4-credit module in which you complete a project. During the course you will plan and perform scientific investigations and experiments, as well as analysing and drawing relevant conclusions based on the selected research design. You will also create a geographic information system (GIS) and apply it to an environmental spatial pattern, and analyse spatial distribution patterns using geostatistical methods. The course also includes performing a meta-analysis, presenting the results of a scientific analysis and evaluate the pros and cons of different methods used for scientific experiments in environmental science. Discussions on the course encompass scientific philosophy, scientific theory and research methodology, and the comparison of approaches such as positivism, post-positivism, constructivism and critical realism.
Course design
Teaching is conducted through lectures, seminars and computer exercises, as well as guest lectures where you can participate in research seminars. The theory module is examined through a written take-home examination, while the project is assessed through assignments and oral and written presentations.
