The course examines theories and practices of decision-making and political governance in multilevel systems, focusing on the European region. It deepens students’ understanding of multilevel governance and European integration theories and explores the EU’s institutional architecture, decision-making processes and policy implementation.
Emphasis is placed on the interaction between European, national and regional actors, including interest groups, businesses and civil society organisations. Through case studies in areas such as environmental policy, digital markets and migration – or other relevant policy fields within or beyond Europe – students analyse policymaking in practice. The course also discusses current crises and challenges for European governance, including democratic backsliding, geopolitical shifts and socio-economic divides, and their implications for the future of multilevel governance.
This course is only open for exchange students.
