The course examines the relationship between human rights, democracy and development and how the relationships between these can be understood. It covers a number of fundamental theories and issues dealing with the links between human rights and democracy, such as the demands that can be placed for a political system to be called democratic, how different perceptions of human rights and democracy are linked to each other, whether the protection of human rights presumes a liberal Western model of democracy, and whether the discourse surrounding human rights can be separated from that on democracy.

This course is only open for exchange students.
