This C level course has three modules: 15-credit Bachelor’s essay and two 7.5-credit modules. The essay is compulsory, but other two modules are somewhat optional. By the end of your degree you must have pass grades in Intermediate Microeconomics, Intermediate Macroeconomics and Econometrics, so the composition of your B level course will determine the courses now available for you to choose from. Whichever 7.5-credit modules you choose, you will learn to critically review scholarly work, partly based on theory and methodology and partly on the statistics used, and gain in-depth insight into the role of economics in social development and the responsibility associated with using economic tools. You will also be able to approach problems in social-economics autonomously and critically, and to evaluate ethical aspects of economics research.

Course design

The essay module begins with an introduction to the art of essay writing and moves to critical analysis of a selection of previous essays. The preliminary draft of your essay will be discussed during a seminar and you will learn how to analyse methodological problems in research. The examination for this module is divided into three parts: presentations in methodological seminars; presenting and discussing your essay in an open seminar, with a peer reviewer; and providing peer review for another student.
