Linguistic theories, their application, and societal contexts

This Bachelor’s level course provides an introduction to concepts such as morphology, semantics, pragmatics and sociolinguistics. You will learn about modern linguistic theory, as well as about linguistic variations and how they relate to geographical, historical and cognitive factors. More practically, by the end of the course, you will not only have improved your oral and written skills in English, but you will also be able to apply linguistic methods to analyse the interplay between language use and social context, and produce a guided analysis of English-language material.

The course is taught through lectures and seminars, with about five contact hours per week. It is examined through attendance at the lectures and active participation in the seminars, as well as an essay and a written exam.
