Potential careers in research or the practical application of knoweldge This two-year Master’s programme is excellent preparation for doctoral studies within the field of media and communication, nationally and internationally. Current research and practice in media technology and production During the first year of the programme, you will study the theories and methods of media studies. The courses cover subjects such as canonical texts, the media and culture industries, the media and everyday life and the media and representation, examining contemporary media cultures from a historical perspective. The third semester is devoted to optional courses, which means it is possible for you to study abroad at Södertörn’s partner universities. You will also study academic English during the first semester. The second semester is dedicated to a module on digital media technologies, including a focus on civic media literacy and algorithmic culture. This semester concludes with a methods course that provides in-depth knowledge of academic methods in media and communications studies. The Master’s dissertation is worth 30 credits; courses and individual tutoring focus on its completion, before it is presented in a final seminar. Work on the dissertation includes seminars at which you discuss the progress of your work and theoretical and methodological aspects of research with other students, as well as individual tutoring.
Problem-solving, advanced analysis and the chance to study abroad The programme is designed to provide you with comprehensive knowledge about the theory and practice of the media, and for you to acquire skills in problem solving, advanced analysis, and project completion. The programme thus prepares you for a broad range of professional careers within the media sector; it is also designed to prepare you for doctoral studies within the field of media and communication, nationally and internationally. The programme provides you with the knowledge to critically engage with the current hyper-mediated society from a critical and historically informed perspective. Central contemporary media technologies and production processes are analysed with the help of central traditions of media theory. The third semester of the programme is devoted to optional courses, allowing you to specialise in topics closely related to your intended dissertation subject, and even to study these courses at another university in Sweden or abroad.
