Mathematics Education

Mathematics Education is an interdisciplinary subject that deals with learning in mathematics, with a focus on the contents of mathematics and how this can be concretised and broken down so that learning in mathematics can take place in a meaningful manner. The subject has evolved from Mathematics as a subject, supported by sciences such as didactics, education, psychology and sociology.

Current research in mathematics education focuses on developing research models, theoretical approaches, and methodologies rooted in two academic disciplines: mathematics and mathematics education. This research is primarily focused on developing an interdisciplinary field of research with mixed design and methodology using inductive and deductive research methods.

The purpose of the research is to develop theoretical and methodological approaches to the design of teaching content in relation to effective learning processes in mathematics. Theoretical starting points from researchers such as Van der Waerden, Frendenthal, Vernaud, and Vygotsky, among others, have been used and developed in relation to the current research context.

The research in this subject has resulted in both theoretical and empirical research studies and in the development and expansion of knowledge about the interaction between teaching and students'/teacher students' learning of abstract mathematics. Within this research work, concepts for teaching and learning have been developed in a content-specific learning context that primarily deals with concepts for repetition, transition from arithmetic to algebra, and problem solving. The content-specific learning contexts are linked to mathematical areas such as rational numbers, multiplicative structures, multiplication tables, Abelian semigroups, inverse operations, and algebra.

The subject teaches mathematics and mathematics education in teacher training programs. In addition to research and teaching, the subject's teachers and researchers have collaborated continuously with municipalities, schools, and practicing mathematics teachers.
