Visas and residence permits for studies

Students from countries outside the European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA) are generally required to obtain a residence permit to study in Sweden if they intend to stay longer than three months. The Swedish Migration Agency calls this as a residence permit for first- and second-cycle higher education studies (Bachelor’s and Master’s levels). You should apply for a residence permit specifically for studies, rather than a visa, which is typically intended for short-term visits.
EU/EEA/Swiss/Nordic nationals
EU/EEA citizens who are registered at a Swedish university and have comprehensive health insurance are automatically granted right of residence in Sweden. As a result, they are not required to apply for a residence permit through the Swedish Migration Agency.
Swiss citizens are subject to specific regulations: they are permitted to move to Sweden to study and may apply for a residence permit after entering the country.
Citizens of Nordic countries are exempt from the requirement to obtain a residence permit.
Non-EU/EEA nationals
All non-EU/EEA citizens intending to study at Södertörn University for a period exceeding three months are required to obtain a residence permit for studies. The Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) is the authority that issues residence permits. Students from outside the EU/EEA are encouraged to submit their applications online, which is the most time efficient method, although applications may also be submitted through a Swedish embassy or consulate in their country of residence, albeit with longer processing time. Please note that not all Swedish embassies and consulates-general deal with migration cases.
