My research is about the contribution of contemporary environmental activism in the Western Balkans area comprising the non-EU countries in the region. How do such movements play different roles in successful structures systems, and behaviour change, along with facilitating stability in a tense, politically unstable region; how do they address different sustainability challenges and provide pathways for the sustainable future of the region?

The subject area of the research deals with conflict, state-society relations, governance processes and power relations over land and water use in the Western Balkans region.

Hence, the ambition of the research is to explore the idea of the good environmental governance in the Western Balkans region and the roadblocks to achieving sustainable outcomes, such as corruption and environmental corruption, transparency, accountability, the political instability of the region caused by ethnic separation and hostilities, democratic backsliding, participation, equity, and inclusiveness.
