Minor Field Studies (MFS)

Minor Field Studies is a scholarship of SEK 25,000 funded by Sweden’s aid agency, SIDA. The scholarship provides students at Södertörn University with the opportunity to conduct a field study in a developing country to collect material for your degree project.

The Minor Field Studies scholarship programme allows you to deepen your knowledge of global development issues and Swedish aid cooperation. Through the programme, you can conduct a small field study in a low- or middle-income country for at least 6 consecutive weeks (42 days).

You can apply for the scholarship if:

  • You are enrolled on a Bachelor's or Master's programme at Södertörn University.
  • You are planning to conduct a degree project at Bachelor's or Master's level.
  • You are a Swedish citizen or have a permanent residency permit (PUT) in Sweden.
  • You are proficient in English (or possibly another working language).
  • You have not previously received an MFS scholarship.
  • You have never started doctoral education.

How to apply

The call for the autumn semester of 2026 is open from 20 March to 20 April 2026. Apply by completing the documents below and emailing them to mfs@sh.se. You may travel as early as 1 September 2026 and must return to Sweden no later than 31 December 2026.

Application criteria and conditions

  • All MFS applications are individual. Even if two students are writing their project/essay together, their applications will be individually assessed. The project description must clearly state who will do what during the field studies.
  • The project/essay must be written in English.
  • The national coordinator for the MFS programme is Stockholm University, but you apply for scholarships through Student Services at Södertörn University. Södertörn University therefore decides all internal MFS applications.
  • You must have a supervisor at Södertörn University and a contact person in the host country. The Swedish supervisor has primary responsibility for the project and academic supervision. The local contact person assists on-site but is not responsible for the content of the study.
  • Please note that field studies cannot be conducted in more than one country.
  • The field study must be related to Sweden’s development cooperation or humanitarian aid. Development cooperation is long-term support for the development of other countries, while humanitarian aid is emergency support in crisis situations. Read more here: Start page | The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency | SIDA External link..
  • You are responsible for checking visa requirements and applying in good time before your departure.
  • The field study may not be conducted in a country where the Ministry for Foreign Affairs advises against travel. Read more about travel advisories at UD avråder - Regeringen.se (In Swedish) External link.. If the Ministry for Foreign Affairs advises against travel to a country after a student has departed for field studies, Södertörn University has the right to recall the student.
  • Remember to choose a potential second host country for your project, as an alternative plan, in case the project cannot be conducted in your first choice of country.
  • Once you have been granted a scholarship, you must participate in a mandatory MFS preparation meeting. At the meeting, you will receive information about the scholarship, insurance, personal security, health, and practical details before, during, and after your planned MFS field study. After your study is completed, you will participate in a follow-up meeting where you share experiences, tips, and advice with other students.
  • General terms and conditions for MFS 2025-2028.

  • The project description's academic foundation, choice of method and overall quality.
  • The project's feasibility.
  • The project’s relevance to one or more of the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • The field study's format, particularly aspects of safety and security.
