Södertörn University has converted to distance education – no teaching on university premises from Wednesday 18 March

The Swedish Government recommends that after 18 March all higher education institutions move to distance education. Södertörn University has followed this recommendation and there will be no teaching on university premises until further notice. This is likely to apply throughout the spring semester. All written examinations will be replaced by other forms of examination for the entire spring semester. Students are asked to stay updated about their course or programme via SH-StudyWeb. Staff and students can access the university premises with their keycards and both Infocenter and the library are open.

Gender Studies

Gender Studies at Södertörn University is an expansive, internationally well-connected field of research and teaching which seeks to advance new forms of interdisciplinary knowledge.

Gender Studies offers interdisciplinary perspectives on the configuration of gender and its intersections with other differences or relations of power, such as race, sexuality, class, and nationality. The research focuses on developing feminist theories and methods, as well as on critical cultural studies of power and gender in historical and contemporary contexts. Strong research areas consist of feminist cultural studies of whiteness; femininities; social movements; citizenship, science and technology; (new) media; reflexive academic writing; and memory cultures.

At Gender Studies at Södertörn University there are several ongoing research projects. We are all running our own research projects from a gender perspective, even if our starting points may differ.

Most of us have a broad, interdisciplinary base for our respective research and we cover a broad field, from biotechnology and queer femininity today, to gender, religion and power during early 19th century. A common denominator between us as researchers is our interest in how power and gender interact in past and present. How sex or gender interacts with other systems of power is also of interest to us. However, our methods, theoretical influences and empirical experiences and knowledge differ from each other. This is due to our different academic backgrounds and education, but also due to where we stand today as well in an academic sence as in society. However, many of us are doing our research within a post colonial and/or queer feminist theory.

Irrespective of which starting point we have, our aim is to have as much connection between the education we provide and the ongoing research as possible.
