Checklist for new students

We have written a checklist for new students, with everything you need to do before you start studying.

  • Collect your SH-Account
Once you have been admitted to your studies, an SH-Account with a username is created for you. You need to activate your SH-Account. To learn more about the SH account, please visit SH-Account. If you are an international student (without a Swedish BankID), you will be able to activate your SH account after your arrival at the university. You will need to go to Infocenter and present a valid ID to collect a single-use password.
  • Activate your multifactor authentication
Multifactor authentication (MFA) is compulsory at Södertörn University. This means that logging in has two steps – with your username and password, and then with a code or approval via an app in your mobile. Read more and activate MFA here. Opens in new window.
  • Register
Registration is obligatory. If you have not registered by the deadline you will lose your place on your course/programme. You cannot log in to SH-StudyWeb until after you have registered. Different courses and programmes have different registration processes; some have a roll-call and others have registration via the internet. It is very important that you find out what dates and what process apply to you! Kindly note that international students especially international fee-paying students are registered on campus during the Orientation Week. Please bring a valid ID card or passport with you. If you miss the Orientation Week, you will be registered by your department or school upon arrival, please contact your school or department for more information. Kindly note that it is the email address you provide in Ladok (the student registry) that the university will use to contact you.
  • Log in to SH-StudyWeb
A few days after you have registered, you will be able to log in to Södertörn University’s learning management system, SH-StudyWeb. You can log in to SH-StudyWeb via sh.se/studentenglish. It is a good idea to click your way around and become familiar with how it works. Read more about SH-StudyWeb.
  • Timetable
To access your timetable, log in to SH-StudyWeb after you have registered for your course.
  • Check your email address
Please note that the university will use the email address you provide in Student-Ladok External link. to contact you. Make sure it is correct and up to date.
  • Collect your SH-Card
You can collect your SH-Card after you have an SH-Account (login details) and have registered. More information about the collection of cards will be published in connection with the Orientation Week programme in summer 2026. Read more about what your can do with your SH-Card.
  • Library card
Your SH-Card also works as a library card. You need to select a specific PIN code External link. in order to borrow books at the library. We suggest that you select the same code as the access code to your key card.
  • Are you on a waiting list?
Admission from the waiting list happens when someone who has been admitted to a course or programme turns down their place. Based on selection results, people are called for places in turn. Not everyone who is admitted to a course or programme actually starts, so some of them accept more people than they have places for. This means that they do not start calling people from the waiting list as soon as someone decides not to start. In cases where the university deliberately admits too many students on a course, the first person on the waiting list will not automatically by admitted when someone in the same selection group decides to leave the course. This place is taken by someone in the group of extra admissions. Many academic schools also send letters about roll-call and registration along with practical information to everyone who has been admitted and those on the waiting list who have a chance of being admitted. This information says what you need to do to keep your place on the course or on the waiting list. Roll-call/registration are obligatory and you will lose your place if you do not complete them.
  • Download the Zoom client to your computer/mobile device
Zoom is a digital tool that the university uses for remote/online teaching. You are likely to have seminars and/or lectures that are conducted at a distance in the autumn semester. Read more about Zoom when studying.
  • Make sure you have everything you need for your studies
You will need a pen, a notebook and your course literature. You are responsible for purchasing your course literature or borrowing it from the library. You can find the required course literature in the course literature list. Read more about course literature.

The university provides desktop computers in computer rooms and in the library that you can use on campus. If you want to follow lectures online and take digital notes during classes, you will need your own laptop.
  • Join SöderS – Södertörn University’s students’ union
Want to be part of something bigger during your studies? As a member of the students’ union, you not only get exclusive benefits, but also routes into student life and an influence over student affairs at Södertörn University.
